The Novamont Group is world leader in the development and production of bioplastics and biochemicals through the integration of chemistry, the environment and agriculture. With 600 employees, the Group posted sales of €170 million in 2016 and made continuous investments in research and development activities (20% of its staff) and has a portfolio of around 1,000 patents. The Novamont circular bioeconomy model is one of the soundest in Europe in terms of investments and new industry-driven technologies, with €500 million invested in plants, directly or in joint ventures, €200 million in research and development, 600 direct and 2,000 indirect workers, 1,000 people involved in construction of 4 new world-class plants, 6 abandoned sites in 6 different regions re-industrialised, developments and impacts for agriculture.

The vision guiding Novamont project is “Living Chemistry for the Quality of Life”, where biochemicals and biomaterials are developed in third generation biorefineries through a strong interaction between agriculture and chemistry. The aim is to produce innovative solutions for final applications capable of delivering strong environmental, social and economical benefits for the system in which they operate (i.e. local areas, regions) by enabling an efficient and sustainable use of the planet limited natural resources.

Novamont biodegradable and compostable bioplastics Mater-Bi® is a starch based family of bioplastics and is suitable for injection moulding, sheet and film applications. Typical applications for Mater-Bi® are: carrier bags, film for agricultural mulching, personal care products, catering products, food packaging. Mater-Bi® is manufactured in the Novamont Integrated Biorefinery in Terni (IT) which has a production capacity of 120.000 ton/year for compounding, and 60.000 ton for polyesters.

Novamont SPA is an industrial company headquartered in Novara (Italy), worldwide leader in the production of bioplastics and compostable materials. It has its roots in the Montedison School of Materials Science and was set up in 1989 with a view to implementing the ambitious project of integrating chemistry, agriculture and the environment. Ever since its foundation, Novamont has been encouraging a new model of sustainable development, through the use of renewable resources for the production of bioplastics for specific applications with low environmental impact.

Novamont’s mission is to develop materials and bio-chemicals by starting up third-generation biorefineries, providing application solutions that ensure an efficient use of resources throughout their entire life cycle, with advantages for the social, economic and environmental system. Under a special brand it produces and markets a broad family of innovative bioplastics obtained thanks to proprietary technologies in the field of starch, cellulose, vegetable oils and their combinations. These biomaterial’s properties and characteristics of use are very similar to those of traditional plastics, but at the same time, they are biodegradable and compostable according to the European standard UNI EN 13432.

Main tasks

The selection of biopolymers and bio-additives for a tailored-to-propose formulation for packaging applications, comprising material selection and characterization, and consequently compounding of biomaterials with bio-additives derived from other tasks; the materials selected addressing properties mainly for co-extrusion process.

Novamont will also play a significant role in the optimization of the formulations, with the aim of enhancing characteristics in terms of gas barrier and mechanical properties for packaging applications. Novamont will support also partners in all activities related to process implementation and packaging production, strictly connected to material properties; support in dissemination and management issues is also foreseen.

Novamont will be active in WP 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.
