Uwe Coursework Template

IMPORTANT: Before making your submission, please read Things to be aware of before submitting.

When an assignment is available for you to submit, it will become a clickable link on the Coursework tab in Blackboard. Alternatively, you may access it directly through your course in a content area named ‘Assignments’ available on the left hand course menu. Your instructor should advise you where to access your assignment if held in a different location in your course.

For students submitting Kaltura Media or other Media files, please see the guidance on how to submit below.

QUICK STEPS: submitting an assignment

  1. Enter the Assignments area of your course.
  2. Click on the assignment’s title.
  3. Review the Instructions and any files attached by the instructor.
  4. Browse to attach your submission file. You may attach multiple files - re-select the Browse button to attach another file. Each file you’ve attached will be listed as you attach them.
  5. Do not use the Write Submission option unless specifically instructed to do so by your instructor.
Any text added to this area will be displayed to your instructor as html and may not be marked.
  6. Do not enter text in the Comments text box area, unless specifically instructed to do so by your instructor.
  7. Click Submit.
Please be aware that large files may take a while to submit and it may seem like nothing is happening. Please stay on the submission screen (do not navigate away) and wait for the submission complete.

Submitting Kaltura Media or other media files to an assignment

For students who have been asked to create or upload a video file using Kaltura Media, you first need to access Kaltura Media and upload or create your media file in your My Media area. Once you have completed this, you make your actual assignment submission following the quick steps below.

Important note 1: It is essential that you allow ample time before the submission deadline to upload your media file to Kaltura (we recommend that you allow at least two hours before the submission deadline). Depending on the size of the file, Kaltura will take some time to convert the file before it is available to attach to your assignment submission through Blackboard.

Important note 2: To avoid upload problems, it is recommended that you upload very large media files over a wired internet connection rather than wifi.

Important note 3: Uploading or creating a file in your My Media area does not constitute a submission and instructors will not be able to access your file. You need to complete the assignment submission process following the steps below.

QUICK STEPS: submitting a Kaltura My Media file to an assignment

  1. Enter the Assignments area of your course.
  2. Click on the assignment’s title.
  3. Review the Instructions and any files attached by the instructor.
  4. Click on the Write Submission button and the text editor will display.
  5. To show all the rows of the editor’s functions click on the Show More icon in the top right.
  6. Expand the Mashups tool and select Kaltura Media from the list.
  7. You will see the contents of your My Media area. Click the Select button for the file that you want to attach to your submission.
    • Note: To see media which has been shared with you via the collaborate option you will need to change the view via the View media I own drop down.
  8. You will now see a thumbnail of your media file inside a table in the text editor. If you need to attach any other Kaltura Media files, we recommend you click to the right of the table which contains the first media file before repeating steps 6 and 7 again.
  9. If you need to attach any other files to your submission use the Browse My Computer button to find and select them.
  10. When you have attached all the files you are required to, select Submit.

Important: We strongly recommend that you check your submission has been uploaded successfully by following the guidance on the Checking your submission was successful page.

If you need to apply under either the missed assessments or exceptional removal of a mark processes please see here for details.

  • How do I know that I need to submit online?

You instructor will tell you if you must submit your coursework online through Blackboard.

In addition, notification of an upcoming online submission will be displayed in the following places (usually two weeks before the submission date):

    • In the Coursework tab in myUWE
    • In the Coursework tab in Blackboard
    • An announcement in the Blackboard course
  • Where do I find my coursework assignment?

Your assignment will be listed on the Coursework tab in Blackboard, usually two weeks before the submission date.

Please see our Coursework tab guidance for further information.

  • What is the correct file format?

Your instructor will tell you what file format is required - usually it is Microsoft Office Word. The file format required should also be detailed in the assignment instructions.

It is your responsibility to submit coursework in a format your instructor accepts. Do not use the Submission or Comments text boxes unless your instructor tells you to do so. Your marks will suffer if your instructor cannot open or properly view your submission (for example, if you did not follow instructions on acceptable file formats).

If in doubt, check with your instructor.

Please note that Microsoft Office software is available at a discounted price for UWE students.

  • Can I submit .pages files?

.pages files are produced from the iWorks application using Mac. You should only submit .pages files if you have explicitly been told to do so by your instructor.

If you been told to submit in Microsoft word format, in order that the file can be opened by the markers, you must export as *.docx using the File > Export function in iWorks.

  • How do I attach my coursework?

Once you’ve accessed the assignment (see above), you need to scroll down the page until you see the ‘Browse’ buttons.

Please see our Submitting Assignments guidance for further information.

  • I’m trying to submit but Blackboard isn’t doing anything

The time that your submission takes will depend on your internet connection and the size of the file you have attached.

Once you have pressed the ‘Submit’ button, please stay on the page i.e. don’t navigate away, and wait for the submission to complete.

If the process doesn’t complete after ten minutes or if you receive an error message, please contact the ITS Helpdesk on 0117 3283612 as soon as possible.

  • How do I know that my coursework has been submitted successfully?

Please see our Checking your submission was successful guidance.

  • How do I view my mark and feedback?

Once marked, your mark and any feedback provided will be displayed on the Coursework tab in Blackboard.

Please see our Coursework tab guidance for further information.

  • What is the MarkingRecord.txt file for?

When your mark is released to you, a MarkingRecord.txt file is automatically included with your feedback files. This file is intended to provide you with a means to cross-reference the mark shown in Blackboard with the mark recorded at the time of marking. We recommend that you check that the mark shown in the MarkingRecord.txt corresponds with the mark shown in Blackboard and the ‘Unconfirmed Marks Published’ column in the Modules & Marks tab in myUWE.

  • Who can I contact for further help with submitting online?
    • For problems submitting your assignment or accessing your receipt - please contact the ITS Helpdesk
      on 0117 3283612.
    • For queries about your mark or feedback - please contact your course instructor.
    • For queries about coursework requirements - please contact your course instructor.

The UWE Student Advisers may also be able to help:

  • Are the marks shown in the Coursework tab in Blackboard final?

No. All marks displayed through Blackboard are unconfirmed and before any penalties have been applied.

Your agreed marks for all assessments and modules will be available through myUWE once they have been confirmed by the Field Board.

  • Why are my marks different in Blackboard and myUWE?

The marks in myUWE are the official marks as held in the University’s student records system. There are a number of reasons why there might be differences between marks in Blackboard and myUWE, such as the outcome of an assessment offence investigation or a missed assessment or exceptional removal of a mark application, moderation or other normal changes. If you believe there is an error, please contact your faculty Student Administration Team (SAT).

  • Where can I get further advice on Assessment Policy?

Advice is available for issues such as assessment offences and non-submission, on the student Academic Advice Assessment web pages.
